That
list of awards also includes induction into the V8 Supercar Hall of
Fame and South Australian Tourism Hall of Fame, six AVESCO awards as
the nation's best domestic motor sport event and five SA Tourism awards
in the Major Event & Festival and Tourism Product Marketing
categories.
In
winning the 2005 Australian Tourism Award the Clipsal 500 Adelaide was
voted ahead of Melbourne's Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the NT's
Garma Festival of Traditional Culture, Queensland's Lexmark Indy 300
race, the Sydney Festival, Tasmania's Ten Days on the Island, and
Western Australia's Leeuwin Concert Series.
Commenting
on the latest award, V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane said
"this is great testament to both the tremendous success and stature of
the Clipsal 500 and the fact that V8 Supercars are among the fastest
growing sports in this region of the world,"
"V8
Supercars Australia congratulates the South Australian Government and
the South Australian Motor Sport Board on achieving this tremendous
pinnacle in Australian tourism."
South
Australian Motor Sport Board Chairman Roger Cook paid tribute to the
support the Clipsal 500 Adelaide received from the SA Government, the
community, management and the thousands of event volunteers.
Attendance numbers at Adelaide's V8 Supercar event have grown from 162,000
in 1999 to an all time high for a domestic Australian motor sport event
of 255,600 achieved last year. The four days of frenetic action and the
unique 2 x 250 kilometre V8 Supercar race format has also led to motor
sport icon Murray Walker naming it 'the best touring car event in the
world'.
The
V8 Supercar Championship Series again gets underway at the Clipsal 500,
this year's event held from 23-26 March. Vying for honour to wrestle
Holden's mantle back from Ford will be 16 Commodores across nine teams;
