David Saelens beats Uwe Alzen to pole by one-hundreth of a second

Stuttgart. The qualifying session for the first round of the 2006 Porsche Michelin Supercup yielded a close result on the Bahrain International Circuit. Belgium's David Salens turned the quickest lap in 2m:03.864 minutes on the 5.412 kilometer Grand Prix track. With this time, the Monaco-resident and third place-holder in last year's Porsche Michelin Supercup relegated Uwe Alzen from Germany to second on the grid. One of the most highly anticipated concept cars of the show, Saab's Aero X, isn't, says the company, the precursor to a production model, but a pure for-show car, a brand-building exercise and an indication of a bolder future design direction.
This two-seater has, instead of doors or windscreen pillars, a wraparound cockpit canopy, as on the jet planes of Saab's heritage. This gives a pilot 180-degree vision, and with remote controlled opening upwards and forwards via articulated hinges, it also makes for easy entry and exit. Stylistically, it's also a stretched version of the traditional wraparound windscreen used in the 99 and original 900 models. Shown off to full advantage by the show car's white pearlescent paint and dark-tinted glass, the canopy - with a water-repellent coating and anti-UV protection - incorporates the typically Saab curve at the top where it meets the roof section.

Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon 2006

It's the obvious next step to complete the 159 range. As with the 156 before it, the 159 has now spawned a Sportwagon estate-car version. Except that, as before, it's not a true estate car: the rear loading sill, for all its shiny aluminium garnish, is much higher than the boot floor, and the rear seats fold not so much flat as into a gentle hill with a ramp at the base.
